Cat® Entertainment Services Rocks the Rolling Stones

April 04, 2016 11:46

Cat® Entertainment Services (CES) recently provided the temporary power and temperature control for last stop on The Rolling Stones’ “América Latina Olé” stadium tour, which kicked off in Santiago, Chile, Feb. 3 and wrapped up with a ground-breaking concert in Havana, Cuba, March 25.

The final performance of the Olé tour marked an historic occasion — especially for Cubans born around the start of the 1959 Communist revolution, when former Cuban leader Fidel Castro banned all rock music. For decades since then, the only way fans of the genre could keep up with the Rolling Stones and other rock and roll groups of the day was covertly — listening to smuggled records or picking up rogue radio signals.

A few hundred thousand fans turned out for the free concert in Ciudad Deportiva, the capital city’s sports complex. To keep the crowd and the band energized, Cat Entertainment Services supplied 2.5 megawatts of Cat prime power, along with container loads of distribution equipment, HVAC, and site construction products used by the roadies and stagehands to build the entire concert venue.

Behind the scenes, CES technicians installed the power and HVAC equipment and remained on-site to operate it until well after the last note was played.

Cat Entertainment Services Powers Newport Folk Fest

July 31, 2015 15:15

More than 30,000 folk music fans descended on Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island July 24th-26th for the annual Newport Folk Festival.

For three days, fans enjoyed performances by popular folk singers on the festival’s four stages. Friday night’s headliner was Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, accompanied by My Morning Jacket. Saturday, James Taylor surprised fans with a greatest hits mini-set. This marked his first time performing at the festival since his set was cut short in 1969 with news that Neil Armstrong had become the first man on the moon.  Sunday night featured a line-up of artists, billed as “65 Revisited,” homage to the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan playing the festival.  In 1965, Dylan plugged in his 1965 and Fender Stratocaster, “going electric” for just one song. At the time, he was booed off stage for not playing an acoustic guitar at the “fiercely folk” festival. The guitar was never played again — until Jason Isbell was invited onstage to play the guitar Sunday.

While fans were enjoying the music, a team of Cat Entertainment Services technicians worked behind the scenes to power audio, video and lighting for all four festival stages. A twin 300 kW generator, tow-plant generator and four 480 volt transformers were all brought in to “electrify” the legendary folk festival.

CAT Entertainment Services Powers MLB All-Star Broadcast

July 21, 2015 11:06

The best players in Major League Baseball took to the field last week for the 86th annual MLB All-Star Game at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. CAT Entertainment Services was the sole power provider for broadcasters at the MLB All-Star compound.

Two CAT ES 800-kW generators powered the MLB Network and office-trailer area (along with 200-, 150-, and 350 kW generators at the catering tent across Second St. E). Twin 400-kW generators powered ESPN’s operation along the riverfront, and additional dual 400-kW generators handled MLB Network’s red-carpet show near Joe Nuxhall Way. The spread-out nature of the compound made this year’s MLB All-Star a unique show for CAT ES.

“It’s different every year, depending on the location and the setup,” says Jeff Macdougall, project manager, CAT Entertainment Services. “[In 2012], Kansas City was one big compound, so we had just two bigger units paralleled. We didn’t have to spread out our generators as much because everything was nice and tight. In a lot of years like that, when it’s just so hot, we will put 20-ton air-conditioners in front of the TV trucks to cool them down a little. But it hasn’t been too bad here, so that [wasn’t required]. It’s definitely a very big one for us though.”
