Throughout 2010, Cat® Entertainment Services (CES) has been working closely with customers and Daytona 500 BroadcastingCaterpillar® to provide equipment and technical services at the highest standard possible.

"When it comes to remote broadcasting, our objectives are twofold," explained Junior Martin, a broadcast specialist for the company. "To provide reliable redundant power using Caterpillar products and CES technology, and to invest in people and product support that meet or exceed the critical requirements of our customers."

In conjunction with Cat, Entertainment Services this year has made significant investment in new products that not only meet current emissions requirements, but also will comply with EPA regulations for years to come. In alignment with Caterpillar’s environmental philosophy, CES takes a market-based approach, focusing on aggressive development of current and future clean technologies that reduce emissions and sustain the environment.

With respect to power quality, CES has modified existing products and is committed to implementing new products with power data devices that will:

  • Record generator output data every second during an entire event

  • Provide a trend pattern onsite as the customer requires

  • Save and archive the data for future reference

Whether supporting collegiate athletics or professional sports, CES continues to supply reliable, quality power to broadcast customers in TV compounds around the globe. Green Backup a Powerful Solution for Broadcast Production

Greener Power SolutionsIn August, Cat Entertainment Services supplied backup power for the live television broadcast of the "So You Think You Can Dance" finale at the Kodak Theatre. Unlike conventional backup systems that require continuous operation of diesel generators, Cat Entertainment Services’ 350-kVA UPS (uninterruptible power supply) runs in sync with a biodiesel generator, but only if triggered by a power problem.

The Kodak Theatre faces many unique challenges when balancing the production needs of the entertainment industry with the comfort and well-being of a close-knit community. Dwayne Jones, senior director of Strategic Alliances & Special Events for the Hollywood & Highland Center, was impressed by Cat Entertainment Services’ commitment to provide the perfect backup power solution: one that wouldn’t pollute the neighborhood environment with diesel generator exhaust or noise—especially during the dog days of summer!

Cat Entertainment Services is a worldwide provider of temporary power generation, distribution and temperature control equipment for the entertainment industry with headquarters in St. Augustine, Fla., and branch locations in Orlando and Tampa; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, Calif.; New England and New York. NASCAR Productions Renews Contract with Entertainment Services

Cat Entertainment Services (CES) announced that NASCAR Productions has renewed a multi-year agreement for CES to provide the on-site power for its televised events. CES employs a system of specialized generator sets powered by Caterpillar® engines to provide primary, uninterrupted power to the NASCAR Media Group TV compound, where multiple television networks and other media outlets broadcast the races.

VP Cat Entertainment Services Phil Wessels commented, "We are proud to continue our relationship with NASCAR Media Group, a partnership that is now entering its ninth year. NASCAR is followed by 75 million fans coast to coast and it is an honor to be a part of the broadcasts that the fans look forward to seeing each week from February through November."

A supplier of machines and engines to CES and Cat® dealers around the world, Caterpillar Inc. also has a strong relationship with NASCAR. Caterpillar is now in its 16th year as a team sponsor and is currently the primary sponsor of Jeff Burton’s #31 car, owned by Richard Childress Racing.  "NASCAR provides a very good marketing platform for Caterpillar to promote its products and is a sport that many of our dealers and customers follow closely," said NASCAR Program Director Greg Towles. "The Cat Entertainment Services contract is another good example of the business opportunities available within NASCAR."

Entertainment Services Unveils Greenest Live Show Solution Available

Green UPS Unit

Green UPS Unit

Los Angeles, CA, December 4, 2008 - Entertainment Services, worldwide provider of temporary power and temperature control systems, successfully launched their new, environmentally-friendly 300-kVA UPS (uninterruptible power supply) at a ShowTime® boxing event in Carson, California October 31.

Specifically designed to control backup power automatically, the unit allows a generator to remain powered down until needed, greatly reducing carbon emissions on site. This is the first automatic UPS system offered by Entertainment Services.

"The standard in our industry for years has been the use of the big generators…because of our need for uninterrupted power," said Colin DeFord, an independent technical producer based out of Park City, Utah. "This product will take off in our industry because we are simply eliminating fuel costs and we are no longer emitting fumes into the air."

The unit operates in series between the utility and the end-user, with a backup generator being tied to the UPS. If power is lost from the utility, the UPS keeps the end-user seamlessly powered while simultaneously activating the backup generator. After the UPS senses the voltage from the generator for a set period of time, a breaker is closed within the UPS to allow the end-user to be powered directly by the generator.

Once power from the utility is restored, the UPS will reestablish the utility as the source of power and shut down the generator. The unit also compensates for the utility's spikes and dips, providing a clean power flow to the end-user without having to activate the generator.

The greenest live-show solution currently available to the entertainment market, Entertainment Services' UPS system greatly reduces carbon emissions of the entire production. The unit is noiseless, produces no fumes or exhaust, and is configured for ease of transport and on-site positioning.

Cat Entertainment Services Powers 9-11 Memorial Tribute

Entertainment Services transformers powering the searchlights bring the “Tribute in Light” to life. Two beams of light representing the Twin Towers mark the seventh anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Entertainment Services / New Jersey had the honor to provide power to the annual art installation, "Tribute in Light." Staged at the World Trade Center, the work is comprised of 88 searchlights that create two vertical columns of light to represent the two fallen towers.

Originally lit March 11, 2002—six months after the attack—the display ran until April 14 of that year. The project was launched again September 11, 2003 to mark the second anniversary of the attack, and has been done every year since. It stays lit from dusk to dawn and can be seen from over 60 miles away.

A long-time client of Cat Entertainment Services had been using another supplier to power it up. When that supplier was no longer able to meet their needs, the client turned to CES for the solution.

On September 4, CES technicians reported to Ground Zero in New York City to install the power units for the event. The setup included multiple generators, electrical switchgear and more than three miles of electrical cable along with an extensive rigging package to bring cables up to the top of parking structure.
